30,000 tons. The preponderating part of this raw
aluminium is exported, and the export value of
30,000 tons is approximately sixty million Kroner.
In addition, semi-finished articles are exported to
the value of roughly twe million Kroner. The
aluminium industry has thereby developed into
one of the leading export industries of the country.
ENGINEERING (IRON & STEEL INDUSTRY)
The Norwegian Iron and Steel Industry gives
employment to a greater number of persons and
has a larger pay-roll than any other industrial
branch, and no less than 15 per cent. of the total
value of the manufacturing plant of the country
is sunk in this industry.
As an export trade it plays a minor part, for
90 per cent. of its production serves home re-
quirements. It will be realised, however, that as
a home industry it constitutes a factor of the
greatest importance to national economy.
In recent years the engineering industry has
taken a strong turn in the direction of increased
exports. This export trade does not comprise a very
large number of the products that can be turned
out by Norwegian workshops, but is confined to
certain articles, the high standard of which
ensures them preference where the question of
quality is of prime importance. In the following
we shall make brief mention of a few specialities
