the former country has erected a large plant for
the manufacture of refined aluminium oxide from
bauxite. In 1917 a subsidiary company, A/S Nor-
disk aluminium industri, was formed at Holme-
strand for the manufacture of aluminium sheets
and kitchen utensils, and every description of
aluminium vats and apparatus for breweries,
dairies, and for the requirements of the chemical
and foods industries. In 1923 the power-supply
interests were vested in a separate company, and
the Norsk Aluminium Company A/S took charge
of all the other properties, including the Héyanger
factories. In 1928 this latter company erected a
new aluminium-oxide plant at Hgyanger for the
employment of Professor Harald Pedersen’s
method for refining bauxite, which gives a vana-
dic pig-iron as a by-product. The company has
now branch works and offices in Sweden and
Denmark.
The newest member of the Norwegian alumi-
nium industry is A/S Haugvik Smelterverk, which
built an aluminium plant at Haugvik, Glom-
fjord, in 1926. Manufacturing operations were
commenced in 1927 with hydro-electric energy
leased from government power works in Glom-
fjord. The power capacity of this plant is 24,000
kw., but the present lease is for only 12,000 kw.,
equivalent to an output of 4,500 tons.
The total annual capacity of all these Norwegian
aluminium works is 37,000 tons, but the aggregate
output has not yet been very: much more than
