HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER
Norway possesses exceptional natural facilities
for the production and exploitation of large
volumes of hydro-electric power. The climate is
comparatively humid with a high rate of precipi-
tation. The country is mountainous with good
water reserves in its mountain plains and snow-
clad tracts. There is everywhere a good head of
water; and the rivers flow down to ice-free fjords
with good harbours.
According to expert computations the total
volume of water-power in Norway exceeds twelve
million kw.
The latest official statistics of developed water-
power in Norway give a total of approximately
1,700,000 kw. at the end of 1929, comprising 1452
plants. Of these plants ten are of more than 50,000
kw., nine of 20,000-50,000 kw., and sixteen of
10,000-20,000 kw. The nineteen plants of more
than 20,000 kw. have a total installed capacity of
1,030,000 kw. or rather more than sixty per cent.
of the aggregate developed hydro-electric energy
of the country.
The thirty largest plants are spread over the
country as shown in the following table:
