ZINC
Norway possesses a fair number of zinc
deposits, but at the present time only the Mofjeldet
mines in Nord-Rana, owned by Bergverksselskapet
Nord-Norge A/S, are being worked. In 1932 the
output was roughly 81,000 tons of raw ore, giving
about 13,400 tons of the marketed product — a
zinc concentrate of not above 60 per cent. of zinc.
Further, zinc concentrate is extracted as a subsi-
diary product at the Sulitjelma mines, where the
output in 1932 was 2,600 tons.
The production of metallic zinc was commenced
in Norway in 1907 at Sundlgkken near Sarps-
borg, but these works were closed down in 1930.
In the years 1911-1915 zinc was manufactured at
Ilens Smelteverk, Trondheim, and from 1915 to
1925 at a smelting works in the J¢ssingfjord.
At present only one zine plant is in operation
in Norway, viz., Det norske Zinkkompani A/S.
This company began working in 1923 and em-
ployed 15,000 kw. of hydro-electric energy leased
from the Tyssefaldene company. In 1924 the
power volume was increased to about 22,000 kw.,
and new works were built in 1926 at Eitrheim
near Odda, for the employment of a licence from
the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The yearly
output approximates 40,000 tons, and this plant
is at present the largest zinc works in Europe.
