of iron pyrites have amounted to 500,000 tons per
year. In recent years iron ore has figured very
prominently, the mines in Sydvaranger having
contributed very largely under this head.
The mining industry is of great importance also
to other Norwegian trades, in that it furnishes a
substantial quantity of the raw materials required
at home. It supplies, for instance, large quantities
of iron pyrites to Norwegian chemical-pulp mills
and to the Orkla smelting works for the produc-
tion of pure sulphur for export. Again, the mining
industry supplies raw materials to electro-
metallurgical and electro-chemical works, which
represent one of the greatest export trades of this
country.
This industry now includes also the coal mines
in Svalbard, which have been supplying consider-
able quantities of coal for several years.
