There are, in addition, various specialities
which cannot be mentioned in this brief de-
scription.
The principal markets in Europe are Great
Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Spain,
and Germany; and over-seas: the U.S.A., Brazil,
Argentina, Chile, Australia, British S. Africa,
Japan, China, the British East Indies, and Dutch
East Indies. There is, however, not a corner of
the world to which Norwegian paper and card-
board does not find its way.
QUARRYING
Norway has a wide variety of stones, which
are used for different kinds of constructional and
building work. Granite occurs in great quantities
in every part of the country in many colours
and varieties. There are large granite quarries at
Halden, Fredrikstad, Oslo, Drammen, and in the
western districts. Those at Halden (Iddefjorden)
and Fredrikstad, in particular, have very favour-
able shipping facilities, and produce stone of ex-
cellent quality. Slate, employed mainly for roofing,
is found in large quantities in the western districts.
Steatite, a soft and beautiful stone, is quarried in
Trgndelagen, Gudbrandsdalen, and in the western
provinces. A very large portion of the sculpture
in Trondheim Cathedral and all the more elaborate
stone-work is executed in steatite. The white and
