WOOD PULP
The first mechanical pulp mill in Norway was
erected in 1866, and eight years later the manu-
facture of chemical pulp was commenced. This
marked the beginning of the modern Norwegian
paper-making industry.
In 1913 the output of mechanical pulp (dry
weight) was 364,100 tons, and in 1925 440,000
tons. The production of sulphite pulp stood at
253,990 tons (dry weight) in 1913, against 315,340
tons in 1925; and sulphate figured at 50,220 tons
(dry weight) in 1913, compared with 57,100 tons
in 1925. At the present date there are in Norway
69 mechanical-pulp mills with a productive capac-
ity of roughly 697,200 tons of pulp, and 25 chemi-
cal-pulp mills with a capacity of approximately
450,000 tons sulphite and 90,000 tons sulphate.
As a result of the general world crisis and the
reduced consumption, the pulp industry in Nor-
way, as in other countries, has in recent years
been working at only part capacity. This curtail-
ment of output has been effected by agreements
between the principal European producing coun-
tries. In respect of mechanical pulp the agreement
provided for a reduction of about 50 per cent. of
the moist-pulp capacity in 1931. For chemical
pulp the parties agreed upon a common curtail-
ment of 2128 per cent, of the estimated capacity,
to have effect from November 1, 1930 to December
31, 1932,
