Mechanical and chemical pulp rank among the leading exports of- Norway. The export trade in these products will be seen from the following figures: Mechanical Pulp Chemical Pulp | Dry Moist | Dry Moist Tons Tons Tons Tons 1913 14,661 481,080 209,544 1,635 1929 3,580 596,648 269,177 11,099 1932 3.528 605,517 250,133 17,046 The most important markets for mechanical pulp are Great Britain, France, Belgium, the United States, Denmark, and Holland; and for chemical pulp Great Britain, the United States, France, British East Indies, Japan, Italy, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. TINNED FISH The first modern cannery in Norway was erected on the West Coast in 1873. For many years the output was a small one, but from 1895 until the outbreak of the Great War the fish- packing industry underwent exceptionally rapid growth. This expansion is clearly evidenced in the fact that the production of brisling-sardines, which is the main product of this industry, in- creased in value about one hundred times during 103
