NORWEGIAN TRADE Norway carries on an extensive trade with all countries. A large number of commodities are produced that cannot be consumed at home. This applies particularly to fish and fish products, timber, wood and wood manufactures, fertilisers, and various minerals. On the other hand, Norway requires a variety of articles that she does not produce herself or produces in inadequate quan- tities. This refers especially to breadstuffs, grocer- ies, dry goods, vegetable substances, etc. According to official statistics Norway has a negative trade balance: Purchases exceed sales. But this is because the earnings of the shipping, whaling, and tourist trades are not included in the official returns of trade with foreign countries. For shipping the gross earnings in foreign trades totalled 390,000,000 and for whaling about 50,000,000 Kroner in 1933. The tourist trade is estimated to yield between 25 and 30 million Kroner per year. The following figures show the external trade of Norway: 107
