NORWEGIAN TRADE
Norway carries on an extensive trade with all
countries. A large number of commodities are
produced that cannot be consumed at home. This
applies particularly to fish and fish products,
timber, wood and wood manufactures, fertilisers,
and various minerals. On the other hand, Norway
requires a variety of articles that she does not
produce herself or produces in inadequate quan-
tities. This refers especially to breadstuffs, grocer-
ies, dry goods, vegetable substances, etc. According
to official statistics Norway has a negative trade
balance: Purchases exceed sales. But this is
because the earnings of the shipping, whaling,
and tourist trades are not included in the official
returns of trade with foreign countries.
For shipping the gross earnings in foreign trades
totalled 390,000,000 and for whaling about 50,000,000
Kroner in 1933. The tourist trade is estimated to
yield between 25 and 30 million Kroner per year.
The following figures show the external trade
of Norway:
