SILVER-FOX FARMING
This comparatively new and important industry
was established in Norway before the War, the
first pair of silver foxes being imported in 1913
at the cost of 60,000 Kroner. Prices subsequently
fell to some extent, so that in 1917 a pair of silver
foxes could be bought for 15,000 Kroner. Fox
farms were established in various parts of the
country, but particularly in Sunnmgr (M@gre
county) and other districts in the West. In the
initial period this work was mainly confined to
the production of breeding animals, which were
sold at home and also to Sweden and other coun-
tries where fox farming had been taken up.
Norwegian farmers imported most of their
animals from Canada. In 1927 imports from that
country amounted to 1400 foxes. In 1926 silver-fox
breeders organised their national federation under
the name of Norges S¢lvrevavlslag, which effected
stringent control of all foxes in order to ensure
a good and remunerative stock. The federalion
has held several shows and competitions, which
have been of great help. Since breeders
reached that stage where they could begin to
