HOME INDUSTRIES AND CRAFTS
At a very early date in the progress of European
civilisation Norwegian handicrafts of every kind
had attained a high degree of artistic sense. Wood
carving and the application of graceful designs
for the decoration of arms and domestic utensils
are wonderfully exemplified in the discoveries
made in connection with the unearthing of the
famous «Oseberg» viking ship, and now exhibited
at the Historical Museum, and in the Folk Museum
at Bygd@y just outside the capital.
The Folk Museum, housed in old buildings
transported from their original sites and re-erected
in a lovely setting of meadows and pine woods,
is among the most interesting «sights» Norway
has for the visitor. Here are gathered clothing,
furniture, tapestry — every conceivable form of
the many crafts which so effectively reveal the
inherent talents of a nation. They are displayed
in the rooms of the old houses and huts in such
a way that the cold atmosphere of an ordinary
museum is wholly dispelled. They are seen as
though the hands that carved and wrought and
spun and wove them generations ago had merely
laid them aside for a moment.
Norwegian arts and crafts reached the peak of
