A CRUISE TO THE MIDNIGHT SUN
The reader will perhaps query the possibility
of journeying to a land where the sun shines at
night. Such a journey is, however, not only
possible; it can even be performed with the
greatest ease and under the most agreeable condi-
tions if it is done in Norway.
The Midnight Sun may, of course, be seen at
midsummer at any point north*) of the Arctic
Circle, but this circle lies only 23°27’ from the
North Pole and runs through extreme-northern
Siberia, across Alaska, the northernmost tracts of
Canada and across Greenland. As we all know,
travel in these polar regions, even in summer,
is not a particularly pleasant matter for the
ordinary tourist. But the Arctic Circle also runs
midway across far-flung Norway, whose stately
and beautiful coast faces the Gulf-Stream tempered
waters of the Atlantic. It is always enjoyable to
cruise along the coast of Norway, and particularly
so at that season, of the year when the Midnight
Sun lights up the Far North.
But the Gulf Stream penetrates still farther
*) As a tourist attraction we may leave out of account the
Midnight Sun in the southern hemisphere.
