north, even to the polar end of Svalbard, and
renders the fjords of West Spitsbergen navigable
in the summer months. In these fjords in the
extreme north we find the wildest and, at the
same time, the loveliest scenery imaginable.
And now we shall embark on our voyage to that
great land of the Midnight Sun: Northern Norway
and Svalbard.
On a day in July the «Stavangerfjord», one of
the large, modern Atlantic liners of the Norwegian
America Line, lies in Oslo Harbour ready for a
pleasure cruise to the Wonderland of the North.
Travellers from many lands pass up her gangway
— from the U.S.A., Great Britain, from different
parts of the Continent, and from Norway, Sweden,
and Denmark.
Oslo Fjord lies smiling between the blue hills
in the warm summer night as we sail down
towards the open sea. In a few hours a beacon
flashes a welcome. We are passing Fzerder Light-
house and entering the gently undulating Skager
Rack.
Next morning our ship is anchored off Skagen,
the famous bathing resort on the northernmost
point of Denmark. Here passengers are landed for
the day to enjoy the attractions of this popular
seaside town, before beginning the cruise north-
ward. Bathing may enjoyed on both sides of the
Skaw — the narrow spit of sands separating the
Skager Rack from the Kattegat.
