NORWEGIANS ABROAD
After the Norsemen of the Viking period emi-
grated to Iceland and thereupon settled in great
numbers in Ireland and Great Britain, also in
France (Normandy) and possibly in other coun-
tries, there was little if any emigration from
Norway for many centuries. It was in 1825 that
emigration from Norway to the U.S.A. commenced
on a big scale. Since that time it is presumed that
roughly one million Norwegians have emigrated
and settled in foreign parts. The vast majority of
them have gone to the U.S.A. It is estimated that
_ there are now living in that country about two
million people of direct Norwegian descent, including
also the direct descendants of the oldest Norwegian
settlers.
NORWEGIANS IN THE U.S.A. IN 1930
According to the official American census of
1930 there were 1,100,098 Norwegians living in the
U.S.A. Of these 347,852 were born in Norway;
the remainder were born in the U.S.A. of parents
born in Norway.
The Norwegian population in the U.S.A. is
distributed as follows over the various geographical
areas:
