ROYAL ORDERS OF CHIVALRY Den Norske Love (The Norwegian Lion). Instituted by King Oscar II on Januar 21, 1904. This order has only one class. The number of Norwegian knights, exclusive of the princes of the blood royal, must not exceed twelve. These knights may be chosen only from among those who already hold the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav, and who have moreover distinguished themselves in the performance of some honour- able act or work in the service of the country. The order may be conferred upon other than Norwegian subjects, but then only upon heads of states, members of reigning houses, or the highest dignatories of the respective states. The Norwegian Lion has not been conferred since 1904. The Royal Order of St. Olav. Founded by King Oscar I on August 21, 1847. This order is conferred as a reward for distin- guished service to the country or to humanity. 213
