His Majesty the King is the Grand Master of the Order and the royal princes hold the highest class of the order. The King, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, appoints an Orders Council comprising a chancellor (president of the council), a vice- chancellor (vice-president), and two other mem- bers. They hold office for six years. The head of the King’s civil list is a permanent member of the council, and its treasurer. The Orders Council submits recommendations to the Grand Master in respect of the awarding of orders to Norwegian subjects or to foreign persons who are considered to merit such recognition. The Order of St. Olav has the following classes: Grand Cross Commander I class > II » Knight I class > II » Holders of the grand cross may be awarded the collar determined by the Grand Master, and to which the commander cross is attached. The insignia of this order must be returned on the death of a member. The Chancellor of the Order of St. Olav is Mr. J. Blydt, Bergen, appointed in 1932. 214
