Fram Medal. Instituted by King Oscar II on September 9, 1896, the day on which Fridtjof Nansen and his companions returned from their North Pole Expe- dition in the «Fram». It was awarded to the mem- bers of that expedition, and also to the members of the Second Fram Expedition under Otto Sver- drup. South Pole Medal. Established by King Haakon VII on August 20, 1912, and awarded to the members of Roald Amundsen’s Expedition in the «Fram» to the South Pole in 1910-1911. 216
