Då hon kom ut, fick lion se; att det hade bildat sig en liten sjö
mellan hennes vagn och den plats, där hon själf befann sig. En
förbigående herre, som märkte hennes svåra belägenhet, gick fram till
henne, fattade henne varsamt om lifvet och bar henne bort till
vagnen. I stället för att tacka den hjälpsamme herrn vände damen
sig till honom och sade i förnärmad ton: »Oförskämda människa!»
Utan att säga ett ord grep herrn henne åter om lifvet och bar henne
tillbaka till den plats, där hon nyss hade stått. Därefter bugade
han sig artigt och aflägsnade sig.

the furious beasts were but a few paees away. He stood firm, and
faced the lions. This had the desired effect. They stopped at
once, and seemed to be overcome by the Bishop’s steady gaze.
Without taking his eyes off them for an instant, he ,slowly walked
backwards step by step, till he was about a hundred yards away.
Then he turned round and walked quietly off. The slightest feart
or an attempt to run, would no doubt have cost him his life.
