A pedlar who, among other things, had a large stock of red
caps, came to the borders of a wood. As it was a hot day and he
felt tired, he lay down under a tree with one of the caps ön his head,
leaving his other things ön the ground. He soon feil asleep. When
he awoke he found, to his great astonishment, that the caps were
ali gone, and, looking up into the tree, he saw a troop of chatte ring
monkeys, each with one of his red caps, ön its head. He tried his
utmost to get the monkeys to drop the caps, but in vain. At last he
töre the cap off his own head, flung it into the ground, and
ex-claimed angrily, »This is the last of them, they may as well have
this too!» He had no sooner uttered these words than he received
a shower of caps from the branches, each monkey, in imitating him,
having thrown his cap to the ground. You may be sure the pedlar
lost no time in picking them ali up, and starting again ön his journey.
