" The inmost of a soul. Look in my eye.
A fervid flame my soul is now expelling,
And to your question that is my reply
Look at my brow, paled by a secret yearning.
See how my bosom heaves. What’s beating there?
A heart of love and longing ever burning,
A heart that joy and pain together bear.
Ask me not why I love. As well be asking
The rose bud why it, when the sun appears,
Delightfully receives its heat while basking
In genial splendor. Ask it why in tears
The eye it closes when the sun is waning
In clouds along tke great Hesperian slope.
For only thus am I the soul-life gaining
Less which my days are void of light and hope.
