ver i Canada, och lät mig för Kongl. Biblioteket få inköpa
Almqvist-brefven från 1863—1864. Den stort utkastade planen om en
illustrerad biografisk encj^klopedi hade aldrig blifvit realiserad, men
Mr Morgan, som 1863 var en ung man om 21 år, förvarade ännu
bland materialierna för sitt afsedda verk de bref, hvilka kunde
intressera den svenska litteraturhistorien.
Mr Morgan hade i maj 1863 tillskrifvit Almqvist med adress:
Stockholm. Brefvet mottogs der af fröken Maria Almqvist, som den
6 juli svarade Morgan, att hennes far under många år befunnit sig
på resor, och att hon, så snart hon får reda på hans nuvarande
adress, skall tillställa honom Mr Morgans bref. Redan den 8 augusti
daterade Almqvist i Filadelfia sitt autobiografiska meddelande till Mr
Morgan. Det följer här i noggrant aftryck.

Sir!
I acknowledge the arrival of your Letter, dated Quebec May 18,
1863; and I beg your pardon for my answers coming låte enough,
as your Letter was sent first to Stockholm in Sweden, and from
there to me, here in America, where I did not get it before Juli 27,
last week. To your intention to publish my Biography in your new
Work: »An Illustrated Biographical Dictionary», to be entitled:
»The Men and Women of the Nineteenth Gentury» &c, I certainly
have no objections; and, accordingly, when You ask me »to furnish
You with such information ön the subject, as I may consider
neces-sary for You to work upon», I venture hereby to send you a list
of my principal hitherto published Works, with some few remarks.
For me, to write a Selfbiography and communicate that with You,
would be, as it seems to me, very improper, as no man is a good
or impartial judge of himself. Besides, I don’t know how large or
how small — I mean, to what extent — You intend to make your
biographical sketches in the Dictionary. The best J can do, then,
is to tell you where to find general biographical notices about me;
for instance, in german (besides Meiers and Pirers lexica) the latest
edition of Brockhaus’ Konversationslexikon, where Almqvist is
spöken of in three different places: 1) sub voce Almqvist; 2) Löwe (one
