Company extracts so-called sulphite spirit, resin, turpentine, sulphite coal, etc.,
from the by-products obtained vin the manufacture of wood-pulp. The Company
has also large factories for making chloride of lime for its own requirements and for sale,
caustic soda and other chemical products.
Skoghall is situated on the shores of Lake Venern, which is connected with
Gothenburg and the sea by the Göta Canal. As the Göta Canal has now been deepened and
enlarged, so as to admit the passage of vessels of over 1,000 tons, the Uddeholm Company
has procured 5 steamers and 6 motor vessels, which not only transport timber and
wood-pulp, but also iron and steel to their different destinations.
MINES.
The most important are: Taberg, acquired in 1732-58; Nordmark, acquired in
1733-50, 1807-08 and 1870-97; the Finnmosse Ore-field, acquired in 1733-35 and in
1865-93; Persberg, acquired in 1861 and in 1872. The total yearly output of these
mines amounts to about 100,000 tons of iron-ore of a high quality.
POWER STATIONS.
The Munkfors Works are driven by electric power taken from the large waterfall
in the River Klarälven at Munkfors. Hagfors, situated right at a waterfall which has
been mounted, is obliged to take additional electric energy from another source. Power
centres, besides those mentioned, are owned by the Company at Forshult, Krakerud,
Malta, Knon, Nain and Stjern, with a total capacity of about 50,000 HP, while there
are other falls which have not yet been mounted, and which form a reserve calculated
at 60,000 HP.
MANUFACTURES FOR SALE.
The Company’s chief manufactures of iron and steel are: Forged and rolled steel
billets for different purposes, containing carbon up to 1*75 %; rolled, solid tube
material; forged and rolled tool-, mining-drill-, file- and spring-steel; hollow-drill steel; rolled
wire for piano strings, wire ropes, twist drills, etc.; all kinds of alloyed steel, rolled
strips up to a width of 400 mm; forged steel bars and axles, forged steel balls; cold
rolled iron and steel, such as hardened and unhardened band-steel, razor-, watch
spring-, band-saw-, steel-pen steel, etc.; drawn iron and steel wire; band-saws;
watch-and grammophone springs; railway and vehicle springs; harrow-, cultivator-, and rake
teeth; wood- and metal-thread screws of iron and brass; rolled seamless steel tubes,
cold-drawn steel tubes and pipes; pipe fittings and pipe goods.
