THE MANUFACTURES.
The rolled products consist of specialities, such as horse-nail plate and H-iron, and
also bar- and rod-iron as well as rolled wire,
The manufacture of steel castings is now one of the Work’s most important branches,
and enjoys a splendid reputation. Articles of all kinds are cast, such as
connecting-rods, cylinders, pistons and other parts of steam engines and turbines; all sorts of steel
castings for electric dynamos and generators; ship castings such as bows and stems,
rudders, propellers, davits, &c.; blacksmiths’ anvils. The weight of the articles varies
from less than 100 grammes up to 30 tons cast weight.
Among the manufactures of special steel castings, mention may be made of high
percentage manganese steel castings to be used for parts calling for heavy wear, such
as cones and jaws for ore- and stone crushers, plates for ball- and tube mills, railwav
crossings, &c.; steel castings of high permeability for electrical purposes, anti-magnetic
steel castings for steering turrets of submarines, chrome-nickel steel castings for rollers
in crushing mills, capable of standing heavy wear, brake-shoes of semi steel, &c., &c.
