Interior of the Saw Mills.

the Dannemora iron. De
Geer gave a great
impetus to the production
of iron in Sweden, so that
the country, instead of
buying war material,
was enabled to sell
in considerable
quantities. In the year 1654,
for example, England
ordered from De Geer’s
iron works, no less than
1,500 cannons at a time.

When De Geer died,
in 1652, the works were
divided among his three sons. Leufsta and Tobo together, in the form of an entailed
estate, remained in the possession of the De Geer family until 1917, when, the
permission of the Government having been obtained, the two works were sold to the
Gimo-Österby Iron Works Co., Ltd., formed the year before. Charles De Geer, who owned
the Leufsta estate in the 18th century, formed the Carlholm Iron Works in 1728, and it
has ever since remained united to the Leufsta works.

Österby, on the other hand, remained only for a century in the possession
of the De Geer family. In 1757 it was sold to the firm of Carlos and Claes Grill and, at
the beginning of the nineteenth century (in 1802), became the property of Anna Johanna
Grill, the relict of one of these partners, and Per Adolf Tamm. In 1809 Tamm became the
sole owner, after having had the management of the works since 1802. Tamm, who
was raised to a peerage in 1826 (he received the title of Viscount in 1843) died in 1856.
He made a great many improvements at Österby, and bought several other ironworks
and forest estates. In 1876 his heirs formed the Österby Iron Works Co., Ltd.

Gimo, too, remained in the De Geer family for more than a hundred years, viz.,
until 1756. In 1805 the works were bought by Viscount A. D. Reuterskiöld in whose
family it remained until 1916 when, as mentioned above, the fusion of the Gimo and
Österby Iron Works took place, and the Gimo-Österby Iron Works Co., Ltd., was formed.

MINES.
As the reader may be interested to learn something of the chemical composition of
the world’s most celebrated iron ore, we give here some analyses of the Dannemora ore:
