and booms for vessels, forms for soda kilns and various welded goods for iron works,
mines and chemical industries. A special line is made of wholepressed cylinders for
compressed gases and air. These cylinders are tested by the official State Controller.
THE FOUNDRY
comprises a steel and pig-iron foundry, a patternshop and an engineering office.
Pig-iron as well as steel castings of up to 20 tons each are supplied according to drawings
or patterns submitted.
FARMING, FORESTRY AND WATER-POWER DEVELOPMENT.
The Company carries on scientific farming on a large scale on the Avesta, Högfors,
Persbo, Engelsberg and other estates. In all of these domains there are large areas of
forest land, besides which the Company owns a large tract of timber land in the
province of Härjedalen. The total area of its forest property amounts to about
25,000 hectares (62,500 acres). The Company, in consequence, does quite a
considerable business in timber, chiefly at Avesta, where there is a saw mill with three frames
and a planing and edging mill. The timber business at Högfors has previously been
referred to^
The Company is well supplied with water-power. The Large and Little Falls,
with a total head of about 18 metres (58 feet), supply about 35,000 HP at the average
flow of the river, but only about 6,100 HP of this have been hitherto used by the
ironworks.
