frame- and T-, U- and Z-sections, as well as a large number of other shapes in special
rolling mills. Thus there are a rolling mill for large dimensions, a medium and two
universal mills, all with their furnaces, shears, saws and adjusting machines, &c.
Rails, scythe and tool steel, file- and drill steel, solid as well as hollow, is also
manufactured.
It is worthy of special notice that Avesta drill steel has an extraordinary tenacity
and cutting capacity.
A speciality is made of twisted bar iron of compound steel with cruciform
sections for concrete reinforcing especially in bank vaults and other strong-rooms.
THE PLATE MILLS
consist of heavy-plate and sheet mills. The heavy-plate mill, which is the largest in
Scandinavia, is composed of two pairs of rolls with rolling tracks, elevating tables
and arrangements for reversing the plates and carrying them to the dressing
machines, shears, heating furnaces, &c. Plates are made in thicknesses of 5-35 mm
(1/5-1 2/5 inch.) with a maximum width of 3,100 mm (124 inch.) and a maximum
weight of 3,500 kilos (31/2 tons) each.
The sheet-mill has two pairs of rolls. Sheets of 1-0,7 mm (l/25-1/40 inch.) and a
maximum width of 750 mm (30 inch.) are manufactured. Special mention may be
made of spade- and shovel- as well as roof-plates. Attention is called also to a
compound plate for safes and similar purposes.
THE AXLE-FACTORY
contains machinery for the production of turned- and compressed steel shafts of all
dimensions up to a diameter of 120 mm (5 inch.) and a maximum length of 9,300 mm
(31 feet).
THE PRESSWORKS AND WELDINGS.
The eldest shop in this department was erected in 1900 and was at first only
intended for the manufacture of pressed steam-boiler end-plates and other boiler
material, but has in the course of time developed considerably. Several large
additions and new buildings have been added within the last few years, and there is now
an extremely varied collection of special machines for the manufacture of pressed and
welded heavy plates for steam-boilers of all kinds, diffusers and digesters for the
wood-pulp industry, cisterns for various purposes, tanks for motors, retorts for
charcoal kilns and heating furnaces, high pressure conduits for water and steam, maéts
