furnace with a flattening-hammer and four bar-hammers. Old documents in the archives
of the Works show quite clearly the demand for concentration caused by the birth of
industrialism; how one factory after the other was shut down, how the mining and
smelting of silver ore soon ceased, and how the manufacture of iron became more and
more concentrated at Hellefors. In 1853 the old fashioned German method of
manufacturing forged metal at Hellefors and Karlsdal was replaced by the production of
Lancashire iron and, at the same time, a gas heating furnace was constructed at Hellefors.
This was succeeded the following year by two more gas heating furnaces, a rough
rolling-mill for bar-iron and a small section rolling-mill. The blast-furnace at Silken
was shut down in 1880 and, five years later, the works at Karlsdal met with the same
fate. In the same year, 1885, two Siemens-Martin furnaces were built at Hellefors, and
the production of Lancashire iron ceased. In 1905 the manufacture of this iron was
abandoned at Sikfors too.
