of cells is developed (figs. 38—41). Often, if the section is not
quite longitudinal, so that only three or four of the cells of the
axial row are left back of the macrospore mother cell, there is an
appearance as though there were a row offour or five macrospores.
It. is evident that extreme care must be taken not to mistake the
large cells of the axial row for potential macrospores. Itis possible
that misinterpretations may sometimes have been made in this
way. In Thypha I was only able to determine conclusively the
real fate of the macrospore mother cell by tracing out ils develop-

ment step by step, so closely did the cells of the axial row agree
in size, structure, and staining reaction with the macrospore mother
cell. The macrospore mother cell develops directly into the fertile
macrospore without any division — —». SCHAFFNER hebt also
hervor, dass die Embryosackmutterzelle nicht Tetradenzellen bildet
sondern in der Entwicklung dem Lilium-Typus folgt.
Schon zehn Jahre früher hatte jedoch Dıerz (S. 19) nebenbei
mitgeteilt: »Die Entwickelung der an der Spitze des Samenknospen-
höckers erscheinenden grossen Zelle, welche ich als die Mutterzelle
der den Embryosack vorbereitenden Zellen bezeichnen möchte, geht
nach den allgemein bekannten Principien vor sich. Die durch
Teilung entstandenen sind 3, ja selbst 4 an der Zahl — —». Die
Angaben von DIETZ widersprechen folglich denjenigen SCHAFFNERS
vollständig.
