PRELIMINARY NOTES.ON POLLEN DEVELOP-
MENT IN TROPICAL MONOCOTYLEDONS.
BY
’BJ. PALM.
Recent publications by GUIGNARD, FARR, SAMUELSSON, TÄCKHOLM
and SÖDERBERG a. Oo. show that a reawakened interest is taken in
the morphological features of pollen development in Angiosperms.
The results thus’ far acquired seem very promising for a better
understanding of some phylogenetic and syslematical problems,
especially in the monocotyledons. As till now, however, only a
comparatively small number. of families and species have been in-
vestigated with regard to the morphology of pollen formation, very
much still has to be done, most perhaps in tropical forms.
During a prolonged stay in Java I have had the opportunity 1o
investigate members of various monocotyledonous families, Some
short notes will be given below of the recorded species; the full
account will be published later together with the data of macro-
spore and endosperm development.
With regard to the nomenclature of the cytokinesis I have
followed that of Farr (1916).
Butomaceae.
As in other members of the above family
Limnocharis flava
shows a very regular successiv bipartition.
