not observed the radial division but am of opinion that the con-
ceplacle develops from the centre. I have nothing to add concern-
ing the development of the sporangia, as they were called by Mır-
CHELL and WHITTING. It is RoE’s »feeling, that they contain
isogamous gametes». I am sorry I was prevented from studying
the living bodies. Externally the sporangia, as I prefer to call
them, are very like the asexual sporangia of the Chordariaceae,
and if my idea of the structure of Splachnidium is right they may
well be homologous with them. No other reproductive organs
occur. There is probably an alternation of generations in cerlain
Chordariaceae, as in some gamelangia and sporangia are found on

different plants, while cases where they appear on the same plants
also oceur. A discussion on Splachnidium from this point of view
seems of little use at present.

In all the young conceplacles that I have found in my new
material there is a mature »inilial», no malter how young the
conceptacle may be. If one could believe that the »initial» belonged
lo Splachnidium, it would lie near at hand to regard it as the first
step towards the formation of the conceptacle. I have taken great
trouble to study the plant from such a point of view. It will
appear peculiar that not more than one »Codiolum» should be
