does not establish itself after hairs have been formed. No trace
of a development of the »initial» was found; also in the earliest
stages (fig. 4) it is mature and shows the long free tail. The posi-
tion of the epiphyte will naturally be central; when, in the growing

apex of a branch, we find half a dozen of these bodies, I believe
most of them have found the weak spot where a conceptacle is
going to be formed.
Conclusions.
KJELLMAN (Nat. Pflanzenfam.) includes Splachnidium in the Fuca-
ceae, without much discussion. MITCHELL and WHITTING have an
order Splachnidiaceae, intermediate, they say, between Laminariaceae
and Fucaceae. Ror retains this position: »as to the vegelalive
growth, the tissue bears an equal resemblance to the Fucaceae and
Laminariaceae, the only essenlial difference being in origin» She
judges the conceptacles to be a good fucaceous character; still
»there are deep furrows in Macrocyslis and Postelsia, which closely
