minuta, immersa, saepe punctiformia, thallo subconcoloria. Hy-
menium angustum, paraphyses incrassatae. Sporae numerosissimae,
late ellipsoideae.
Thallus consisting of more or less dispersed or contiguous areolae,
lorming areas, a few cm. in diameter, uniform, 0.5—1.5 mm. broad
and 0.4—0.6 mm. thick, pale or dark castaneous with opaque or
slightly shining, smooth surface, unaltered by KOH, CaCl,O, and
J, areolae more or less round or irregular but not angulose, slightly
convex with often uneven surface, sometimes with shallow crossing
furrows on the surface, lower side pale brownish, affixed with
about ?/5 of the surface.
Cortex 40—50(—70) u, white, exterior 5—8 u brown, sometimes
with an amorphous stratum 8—20 u thick. Hyphae somewhat
pachydermatous, more or less vertically directed, with netlike
arranged lumina, mostly regularly round, 3—4 u in diameter.
Gonidia yellowish green, 10—25 u in diam., forming a more or
less dense 100—200 u high stratum with somewhat even upper
surface, gradually dissolving towards the medulla. Medulla well
developed 0.2—0.4 mm. thick, white, loosely contexted of more or
less perpendicular or intricate leptodermatous hyphae with elongate
or round articles and many air-filled spaces. Lower cortex gra-
dually passing into the medulla, surface pale brownish.
Apothecia sparingly developed, 1—3 in each areola, at first
punctiform, impressed, then with concave, 0.2—0.4(—0.6) mm. broad,
reddish brown, opaque, on the surface slightly rough disc, the thalline
margin nol or only slightly rising above the thalline level.
Excipulum more or less distinct, 20—30 u. Hypothecium varying
in height, 30—80 u, coloured blue with J. Hymenium about 100 u
high, upper 20 u pale brown, with J coloured pale reddish. Para-
physes firmly coherent, in water rather distinct, 2 u thick, with
4—5 u thick, brownish, swollen ends. Spores very numerous,
broadly ellipsoid, 3—5X2 zu, variously shaped.
Pyenidia not found.
