concavus, thallo concolor, saepe irregularis. Hymenium angustum,

jodo obscure caeruleum. Sporae subglobosae vel late ellipsoideae.

Thallus forming patches up to 2 cm. in diam. among other
lichens, uniform in thickness, 0.s—1 mm., and colour, being almost
pileh-black, at the circumference with 1(— 2) mm. long, more or
less distinct, contiguous lobes, scarcely longer than broad but mostly
distinetly radiating, inner part more or less verrucosely subareolate
without distinct cracks, opaque, unaltered by KOH, CaCl,O,, K(C)
and J, with the whole lower surface fastened to the substratum.

Cortex of very varying thickness, 15—35 u, only exterior 5 u
dark brown, without or with a very thin amorphous stratum.
Hyphae closely intricate, rather leptodermatous with irregular,
1.5—2.5 u broad lumina. Gonidia yellowish green, 8—12 win diam.,
forming an irregular, mostly unbroken stratum 50—150 w thick,
with very uneven and indistinct surface. Medulla very thick,
0.7—0.9 mm., white, with intricate or more or less perpendicular,
3—4 w thick, pachydermatous hyphae, lumina more or less thread-
like. No lower cortex.

Apothecia abundant within the margin, several in the areola, at
first punctiform, then somewhat widened, immersed, 0.2—0.5 mm.
broad, disc coneaye, irregularly round by pressure, concolorous
with the thallus, opaque, the thalline margin elevated.

ixcipulum indistinct or thin, 8 u. Hypothecium 50—60 u, white,
grumose, with J coloured blue. Hymenium 85—95 u, white, upper
15 w pale reddish brown, with J coloured dark blue. Paraphyses
not well discrete, stout, 2—2.5 w thick, not capitate, articles 4—8 u
long. Asci 65—70 X 17—22 u, clavate. Spores numerous, broadly
ellipsoid to subglobose, 3—4 X 2—2.5 u, (according to Frey 3—
5.5 X 2—3 u):

Pyenidia numerous, sometimes several touching one another,
about 240 u deep, wall sometimes infolded, 25 u thick, mouth
brown, 20—70 u broad, sterigmata 8—10 u, simple, conidia 2—3 X 1 u.

Habitat. On *Doggerfels", containing very little lime (faint reaction
with HCl), associated with Rhizocarpon cont. geographicum, Aspicilia sp.
and Lecidea conf. goniophila, partly spreading over the Aspicilia-thallus.

Locality.
Switzerland. Berner Oberland, Schilthorngipfel, at 2,970 m. above

sea-level, 1921. Ep. FREY.
