broad, through hyphal tissue dissolved into numerous, irregular,
differently shaped but usually not vertically stretched parts of gonidia-
lumps. Medulla 0.4—0.7 mm. thick, air-filled, consisting of somewhat
leptodermatous, closely intricate, 3—4 « thick hyphae with round
or elongate lumina. Lower cortex often seen far under the areola,
of the same thickness and texture as the upper one, with pale
brown surface,

Apothecia numerous, mostly single in each areola, immersed,
irregular in shape, 0.3—0.6 mm. in diam., dise reddish brown,
somewhat darker than the thallus, opaque, older ones somewhat
rough, at first concave then plane, not rising above the thalline level.

Excipulum somewhat distinct, 15—25 u, white, within this a
thick white weft of very intricate somewhat pachydermatous hyphae
down to a depth of 0.3—0.5 mm., taking with J a brownish yellow
colour. In one specimen (from Italy) there was a hymenium,
0.6 mm. broad and 85—95 u high, coloured blue with J, the upper
15 u brownish yellow. Paraphyses 2—3.5 u thick, slightly coherent,
with in water distinct, 8—11 & long midmost articles with ellip-
soid lumina. Asci and spores not developed.

Habitat. On granitic rocks. In Switzerland on *Verrucanoblock",
with Rhizocarpon geographicum and sp. (conf. geminatum) and Candelariella
vilellina, at 1,700 m. above sea-level.

Localities.
Switzerland. Engadin, National Park, Varusch bei Scanfs, 1923. E. Prey.
Italy. Valpelline, 1913. Abbé Henry, sent by Dr. B. DE LESDAIN.
Type specimens in hb. Frey and LESDAIN.

On account of the whole structure this species must be an
Acarospora, though no spores are developed. Its nearest relative
seems to be A. praeruptarum, with which there is a rather great
resemblance in morphology, but the structure of the cortex and
medulla and especially that of the gonidial stratum separate them
altogether. Noticeable is also the degenerate hymenium, so con-
stant in several examined, seemingly well developed apothecia.

5. Acarospora Freyii H. Magn. n. sp.

Thallus plus minus orbicularis, ambitu subradiatus, centro indis-
tinete areolatus, umbrino-nigricans, reagentibus immutatus. Apo-
thecia erebra, minuta, punctiformia vel plus minus dilatata, discus
