of point VI and VII; the third curve deviates from the others in
the comparatively sharp ascent from point V to VI. The curves
have been calculated on three specialized, quite independent as-
sumptions. The essential agreement between the curves indicates
that, between broad limits, several approximation formulae for f
may be arbitrarily assumed without altering the general aspect of
the z-eurve. (This and all other mathematical considerations were
discussed with Doctor H. CnawÉn, who paid kind attention to the
problem.)

In ÖSTERHOUT’S experiments on antagonism sometimes the sum
of the molecules was taken as constant, in other cases “equally
loxic^ solutions were used, but in no case has the solution been
based on the weight of the ions, as has been done in the author’s
experiments. In spite of this fact we will compare our three cal-
culated antagonism curves, with OsrERHOUT’s experimental curves,
obtained in concentralions where the nutritive effect may be dis-
regarded; for the difference due to these different methods, are
probably not too great to exclude the comparison of the general
aspect common to our three curves with that of OsrenHOUT’S cur-
ves. We will take for instance an investigation with wheat in 0.12
mol solution (Table IV, [16] p. 104 or [14] p. 130) into considera-
tion. If for comparison we calculate the figures for root-develop-
ment in relative values and the figures of molecular ratios in
