JOHAN HENRIK KELLGREN.
Ur MINA LÖJEN.

This satirical poem, held to be epoch-making in Swedish
literature, is a typical expression för the religious and moral
rationalism of the Period of Illumination.

22. dess visas antal, i. e., the number of her sages, the
traditional Seven Wise Men of Greece. Those generally so
designated are Solon, Chilo, Pittacus, Bias, Periander (or,
some say, Epimenides), Cleobulus and Thales. In the next
lines the poet refers to Democritus, the Greek sage (born
about 460 B. C.), and Heraclitus (about 500 B. C.), known
respectively as the "smiling” and the "weeping” philosopher.
Against the poet’s statement it may be urged that neither
was included ameng the seven.

39. Ve, woe unto.

expanse; fältets prydda ban, the wide expanse of fields abloom.

62. högborn, regularly, högboren.

83. vare sagt, those are my orders; not another word;
