of propriety or tolerance (det går an, it is proper,
permissible, you may properly do it). Used in its literal sense,
gå an means to go on, keep it up, go ahead (cf. go to), the
compound verb angå also differing widely in meaning.
10. låter...sväva, Til let my escutcheon swing, i. e., T’ll
flaunt my newly acquired glory before the eyes of all.
12. sku for skola, used freely by the early poets in the
popular style of verse, is now obsolete, ska (for both sg.
and pl.) furnishing a convenient substitute.
30. gack, archaic imperative of gå, conforming to gick.
3l. sucka för, like Eng. sigh for, though modern Swedish
requires efter with sucka.
35. runt omkring, redundancy, like roundabout.
