ERIK GUSTAV GEIJER.
VIKINGEN.

In the poets comprised in the Gothic Society the student
encounters a wealth of things new to Swedish poetry in
the way of diction, imagery, and terms, as well as subject
matter and mode of poetic treatment.

The form of Geijer’s poem "The Viking” seems
particularly in keeping with the subject matter in the following
respects: a general fluency of rhythmic movement
descriptive of life on the ocean wave, but impeded at frequent
intervals by heavy, sluggish lines, suggestive of the
irregularity of Eddic poetry; further, an archaie trend in
the choice and use of words, after the manner of the Gothic
poets, adding to the antique flavor; finally, the numerous,
and mostly well-chosen alliterations. Among the lagging
lines are — "kom krämarn, så fick han gå”; — "snabb var,
men god deras fart,” and the effective — "De komma från
fjärran, fjärran land.” The aging of the poem is
accomplished by such contrivances as: "på fjället jag språng”
(sprang); — "i blånande djup sönk fjällets topp” (here
written sjönk); — "Jag faders rostiga svärd tog i hand”; —
"Stod jag mig om dagen”; —’"’så rolig som svanen”; —
"begärar mitt blod”; — "det brinnande hjärta det klappar.”
Noteworthy. alliterative expressions are: — "med sippor
stränderna strös; — strömmarna fria störta med fröjd”; —
"min krona i kras”; — "svanen i gungande säv”; —
’"nornorna virka sin väv.” Prosiness and other crudities of form
are apparent in the lines: "Det var en hel vinter”...;—

"Jag ingenting gjorde”...; — "Och åter... jag spejande
stod efter skepp”. sn in the monotonous alliteration "hjälpa
var hjälplös gäck”; in the repeated rhyme: — "vida hav —

skummande hav,” and such a repetition as: — gungande
stäv — gungande säv”—; in the rather trite eleventh stanza,
and in the solitary present tense vill (stanza 8), strongly
