NOTES 91
den — stån — förråden — hån — vriden — villen —
oskuldsfriden — förspillen (giving the phonetic series, en — n —
en—n—en—en — en — en), and "laden — graven — haden
— haven” (in stanzas here omitted). The sing-song
repetition here pointed out is less apparent, however, in this
excerpt than in the unabridged poem.
81. fiskar (ask, in the sense of require, demand, claim),
old Swedish usage now limited to the solemn style.
83. att bära hade, antiquated order. Here hade has
precisely the force of duty or compulsion implied in the
English had to.
86. vad du borde (hava gjort). Cf. Wallin’s revision of
the hymn by Fortunatus (Swedish Psalm Book 106: 2)—
Han fullgjorde. vad vi borde” (hava gjort, or, hade borl
göra).
90. den...hélige Anden. The use of the postpositive
definite article with den helige Ande (the Holy Ghost),

123. tvagit sin kläder, old Biblical Swedish. The
modern tvätta has the same relation to the old verb två as the
verb clean has to cleanse.
125. lyktad (ended), p. p. of lykta, another obsolescent
verb, its usage limited to old texts and solemn discourse.
145. Det är försvunnit. Correct modern Swedish requires
either det är försvunnet or det har försvunnit. The latter
alternative fitting the rhyme and the rhythm both, it is
evident that the author affected an archaic style by
reverting to a period when the distinction between the supine
and the past participle of certain verbs was not sharply
drawn. BSimilar examples are found in certain old hymns,
where the faulty form is retained, however, for the sake
of the rhyme,. Certain editions have det har försvunnit.

according as the rhyme demands. In prose, fred has further
