70. slåss. The reduplication of the s in slås is limited
to the reciprocal and the absolute passive form denoting
habit or characteristics, thus, slås ned, to be beaten down,
but pojkarna slåss, the boys fight, or as in the context. The
vowel is shortened in either case.
11. Täljer sin ålders stav, recounts the events of his past
life (by the marks in his staff), or simply, carves his staff
(a staff for his old age). The ambiguity results from the
double meaning of tälja (1. to tell, narrate, recount; 2. to
carve, whittle).
