EXPLANATIONS.
By AVestern Europe is invariably meant tlie Germanic and Romanic
countries of the continent, inclusive of Finland. By Eastern Europe
is meant Galicia and Bukowina, Hungary, Russia (exclusive of Finland),
and the Balkan peninsula.
The relation per cent is indicated by %, that of per mille, %0. A
point (.) instead of a figure in a table indicates that no data are available.
Other abbreviations and symbols used will be intelligible without
special explanation.
