Ekman, Mr and Mrs Helling, as well as Miss Caroline
Dickson, Blanche’s stepsister, who, we afterwards
learned, had been very desirous to come. Dear Emily had
worked hard, both on the previous days and the day
of the party itself, arranging everything in the prettiest
and most artistic manner, showing pictures and
engravings off in the best light, making use of various old
and new articles of vertu for divers small tables and
athéniennes, and even finding a suitable place for dear
Mamma’s christening bowl, bonbonnières and other old
silver heirlooms, which were of great interest.

Fortunately the weather was mild, which made it
easier to move about in rooms which dared not be
much heated, so she draped a sofa here, and there
festooned parts of walls which required masking,
arranged the small rooms leading to the passage very
tastefully with all sorts of quaint things which suggested
themselves to her esprit d’arrangement. All the morning
a number of beautiful bouquets and other floral
decorations came pouring in from various friends, in the shape
of lyres, cornucopias, etc. among them a kind of car,
filled with a number of delicate pink hyacinths from
young Mr. Carnegie, while a quantity of lovely flowers
were furnished by the Liseberg wintergardens and
greenhouses, which our good Bengtson had reared for this
special occasion, so that the buffet sparkled with
brilliant colours, as the light from the chandelier and lamps
fell on them from above. This splendid show caused
quite a sensation when the guests first entered, and
they wondered where we had procured such a number
of lovely plants in the depth of Winter, and were much
struck when they found that they were all the produc-
