tion of our own small greenhouses, and reared by the
skill and energy of our own plain gardener.

It was very nice that the beautiful standard lamp
sent by 17 British ladies to their good friend Emily
Nonnen for her 80th birthday, and measuring more
than 2 yards from the floor, arrived as early as 2 p. m.
and was seen by Fröken Snoilsky, who called about
that time to express her disappointment at not being
able to spend the evening with us, and brought
»hels-ningar» and congratulations from her brother and
sister-in-law to the birthday body.

At about 7 p. m. our guests began to arrive and the
rooms were soon filled with lively groups, ladies and
gentlemen joining in animated conversation, while a
bright spirit seemed to pervade them all. The tall
lamp which lit up the whole room, shining like
burnished gold and greatly admired by the assembled
guests, caused quite a sensation; to its stem was
suspended a basket painted by Miss Gertie Young,
containing cards from the 17 ladies who were the kind
donors of the lamp. After a while Mrs Dr von Sydow
and Mrs Hallén played some pretty duets with much
expression, and a touching poem was recited with
considerable dramatic effect by Mrs Gustaf Bolander, a
young Norwegian lady. Meantime conversation seldom
flagged, but was carried on vigorously between the
musical entertainments, sometimes in a byway in the
smaller rooms leading out to the passage. Caroline
Wijk and her husband were particularly pleasant, talking
now to the one and then to the other of the guests,
apparently glad to meet some persons out of their
usual circle. Eleonore Dickson was also very nice and
