looked particularly well, and Beatrice was quite bright
and lively.
Soon after 10 o’clock a march was struck up, and
the gentlemen took the ladies down to the hall, where
a long table was spread with many good things, and
plenty of them, and every one did ample justice to
the game, omelettes, cakes etc. I was taken down by
Mr Edwin Willerding, and Emily by Mr Olof Wijk,
and Charlotte and her sofa were safely conveyed by
Eugene Thorburn, Mr Despard and other gentlemen.
Several of the young ladies grouped themselves on
the double flight of stairs leading to the hall, under
the light of reflecting lamps, while the gentlemen were
assiduous in helping them to whatever might suit their
fancy. We had asked Eugene Thorburn to be »vice
várd» and assist us to see that all our guests were well
attended to. As Mr Edwin Willerding had known us
and our antecedentia since he himself was a small
boy, he was considered the right person to propose
dear Emily’s health, which he did in a very kind and
satisfactory manner, touching on her various talents
and selfforgetful goodness, only striving to make
others happy, and he included us two sisters in his
hearty good wishes for our future welfare. Emily
answered in a very nice little speech, thanking warmly
for his kind good wishes but disclaiming all merit of
her own, and only praying that while it was the will
of a merciful God to prolong our life here on earth,
his blessing might rest upon us and follow us into
a higher and better life.
She then observed as a rather uncommon
circumstance that we sisters had in this same house welcomed
