BARON HAMILTON. 1065
NOTE 152.
MAJOR LANTINGSHAUSEN.
Major Jacob Albrecht von Lantingshausen was Count Fersen’s 151
brother-in-law. He entered the French army in 1723, and in 1743,
when he was met by Swedenborg at Ystad, was major of the regiment
called Alsace ; in 1744 he became major-general, and in the following
year left the French service, and returned to Sweden. In 1760 he
was created a baron, and after having filled several important offices
died in 1769.
NOTE 153.
COLONEL SCHWERIN.
The Colonel Schwerin, on whom Swedenborg called at Stralsund
in 1743 (see Document 207), was Claus Philip von Schwerin, who
was born in 1689. In 1737 he became colonel of the regiment by
which Stralsund was garrisoned ; and in 1743 commandant of the
fortress. He died in 1748 (see Anrep, Vol. iii, p. 690).
NOTE 154.
DR. CARL JESPER BENZELIUS.
Concerning Dr. Carl Jesper Benzelius, see Document 9, p. 89,
Vol. I, and also Note 99. To the particulars which are there
recorded concerning him, we add here that in 1742 he received the
appointment of ordinary court chaplain, and in 1743 and 1744 he
undertook his second journey abroad (see "Biografiskt Lexicon"
Vol. II, p. 105), which accounts for Swedenborg’s meeting him at
Stralsund in 1743.
NOTE 155.
BARON HAMILTON.
The Baron Hamilton whom Swedenborg met at Hamburg in
1743 was no doubt Baron Charles Frederic Hamilton, who was court
marshal (Hofmarskalk) at that time, a capacity in which he attended
upon Adolphus Frederic,159 Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, after he had
been elected Crown-prince of Sweden. Baron Hamilton died sud
denly in 1753.
