HISTORICAL CHARACTER OF DIARY. 1067
NOTE 160.
HISTORICAL CHARACTER OF THE PERSONS MENTIONED
IN THE DIARY OF 1743 AND 1744.
We propose to give here a complete list of all the persons whose
names are mentioned in the Diary of 1743 and 1744. Those names
which we were able to identify are printed in italics ; and references
are made to those parts of the "Documents" where their historical
character is established.
The Diary of 1743 and 1744 supplies the text of four documents,
viz., 134, 207, 208, and 209. Names of persons occur in three of
these documents, viz. 134, 207, and 209.
I. In Document 134 are mentioned the names of the following
mercantile firms :
Peter Hultman, see Note 111.
Messrs. Anthon and Johan Grill, see Note 112.
Johan Spieker, London, see Note 117.
Balair, The Hague.
Messrs. Muillman and Sons, [Amsterdam?]
Franz Jennings, see Note 114.
Mr. Mackei, London.
By a reference to Note 111 it will be seen that Peter Hultman
was Swedenborg’s banker in Stockholm from 1737 to 1764. Con
cerning Messrs. Anthon and Johan Grill we learn from Docu
ment 135, B., that Swedenborg’s letters were to be addressed to
their care in 1748, and from Note 112 that Swedenborg sometimes
dined at their house in Amsterdam. Of Johan Spieker we read in
the "Anteckningar rörande Svenska Kyrkan i London," that he was
born in Finland in 1685 , and that he arrived in London in 1712,
where he established a banking business, and died in 1775. Franz
Jennings was born in 1692, and amassed a large fortune as merchant
and banker in Stockholm; from Document 137 we learn that Sweden
borg in 1759 invested a sum of 10,000 dalers in the firm of Jennings
and Finlay. From all of this, however, it appears that four out of
the seven mercantile firms mentioned in Document 134, not only
had a real existence in 1743, but also that Swedenborg was in the
habit of transacting his business through these firms.
Besides these mercantile firms there is also mentioned in Docu
ment 134 the estate of the late Celsing (Celsingens Sterbhus) ; this
refers to the estate of Gustavus Celsing, Chancellor of the Court
(Hofkanslär), who died in 1743.
