PHILOSOPHY OF DREAMS. 1075
Again, by "a woman who owned a large estate," in no. 120, is
represented piety and wisdom ; and by the queen in no. 201 ,
wisdom.
In no. 5 the Queen represented his Regnum Animale, and his
"Sister Hedwig" in no. 71 , his Economia Regni Animalis.
In no. 148 Swedenborg says that "with overflowing tenderness
he, as it were, took leave of a female friend, kissing her, when
another appeared at some distance from her." By this is signified
that he had finished Part III of the Regnum Animale, treating of
the senses and of the operation of the interior faculties, and that
he is approaching Part IV. which treats of the brain.
B. An intense interest and delight in spiritual and philosophical
things, in significative dreams is represented by love and affection
for, and marriage to, the women by whom these things are repre
sented. Instances of this kind occur in nos. 80, 114, 120, 148, 205 ,
209. A profanation of spiritual things, i. e. of good and truth, on
the other hand, is represented by adultery and whoredom, as may
be seen from no. 183.
C. A distaste for particular studies, or their discontinuance,
again, is represented by a separation from, or an aversion to, the
women by whom these things are represented. Such instances occur
in nos. 71 and 148. In no. 125 worldly things are represented by
"a fat, red woman," with whom Swedenborg would have nothing
to do.
D. A woman "being with child," in no. 171 , signifies that Sweden
borg "is now engaged in writing and bringing forth what he has
undertaken;" while by the two grandsons of Brita Behm, "the two
Rosenadlers," in no. 152, are represented two works Swedenborg has
produced, viz. the work on the internal senses, and that on the
brain ; Brita Behm according to Principle II representing Sweden
borg himself.
E. In no. 192 the Moravian church is represented by a woman,
in accordance with the principle of correspondence, by which the
church is represented by the bride and the wife, and the Lord by
the bridegroom and the husband (see A. R. 797 and 881). And by
Swedenborg’s not approaching the woman in no. 192, is meant that
he is not accepted in that church.
F. In the "Spiritual Diary," no. 4146, we read as follows : "Some
times it was shown to me in sleep that spiritual angels conversed
with one another about my writings, saying they were not true, or
about similar things, when it appeared to me in sleep as if I com
mitted whoredom or even adultery. In this manner was represented
in my dreams what they conversed about." Dreams of this very
