PHILOSOPHY OF DREAMS. 1081
XI. By birds are represented "the things of the understanding,
and also thoughts, and consequently those things which are thence,
thus in a genuine sense truths of every kind, and in an opposite sense
falsities" (A. C. 5149), and in no. 132 of Swedenborg’s Private
Diary we read that by "birds which came flying towards him, and
which he struck with a knife, so that they died, are signified wild
thoughts which he killed with the help of the Spirit."
By dragons are signified reasonings from the lusts of evil
(A. C. 7293), and in the Private Diary no. 199 we read that they
signify "spurious loves, but which do not appear as dragons, until
their wings are discovered," i. e. until the falsities which these
spurious loves hatch are seen.
XII. "In the Word the life of love, or what is the same the will, is
called the heart" (A. C. 9050), and in no. 189 of the Diary for 1744
we read, "I saw also in a vision a heart filled with blood, by which
is meant love."
The feet signify what is natural (A. C. 2162), wherefore some
one "not being able to get along with the foot," is explained
in no. 8 thus, that "natural reason cannot agree with spiritual
reason."
By the sole of the foot is represented the ultimate of the natural,
or the sensual mind (A. C. 7729), where man’s evils mainly reside ;
by "the soles of the feet being white" is, therefore, represented in
no. 166, Document 209, that "the sins are forgiven."
In A. C. 5323 we read, "The bending of the knees is a repre
sentative sign of adoration ; for if adoration flows from genuine
humility, then there is a failing of spirits, and hence a giving way
of the joints where the spiritual is conjoined with the natural, and
thus where the knees are; for what is below the knees corresponds
hat is natural, and what is above to what is spiritual." This
serves as an explanation of no. 63 (5) where we read, "Afterwards
my knees moved involuntarily, which perhaps signifies that I have
become somewhat humble."
XIII. In A. C. 3164, we read that "vessels of silver signify matters
of knowledge or scientifics, for these are the recipients of truth ;"
and in no. 31 of the Private Diary, that "by Swedenborg’s taking
two vases of silver with him, is meant that he has acquired much
knowledge in spiritual things."
The "wind in wings" in a genuine sense means "thinking from
spiritual truths," in an opposite sense "reasoning from fallacies”
(A. E. 283) ; in no. 66 Swedenborg states that the "sails of a wind
mill" represent his thoughts.
In A. C. 5023 we read, "A house in the internal sense is
