the man himself or his mind ;" such also is the interpretation given
by Swedenborg of a house in no. 15 of his Private Diary, where
we read, "Two persons entered into a house which although built
was not yet furnished ; they went round, but were not favourably
disposed. This signified that I had invited the Highest to me,
into an unprepared and untidy hut, which was found to be unbe
coming."

From all this it appears that Swedenborg’s interpretation of his
dreams in 1744 is based on the principle of correspondence ; although
his knowledge of correspondences in 1744 was by no means
accurate as it became after he was fully introduced as to his spirit
into the spiritual world in 1745. Hence it appears that on the
score of the interpretation given by him to these dreams there is
no rational ground why we should doubt their authenticity.
NOTE 162.
SWEDENBORG’S SPIRITUAL STATE IN 1743 AND 1744.
I. A summary view of his spiritual state during the years that
immediately preceded the full opening of his spiritual sight in 1745,
was given by Swedenborg in the " Spiritual Diary," no. 2951, which
is quoted verbatim in the Introduction to Document 208, pp. 145
and 146, and the contents of which we reproduce here in a tabular
form with letters for convenient reference:
A. Before his mind was opened, so that he could converse with
spirits, he had dreams during several years, by which he was in
formed concerning the things on which he was writing.
B. He experienced changes of state while writing, and there was
a certain extraordinary light in the things written.
C. Afterwards he had visions with closed eyes, and light was
given him in a miraculous manner.
D. Spirits [entered by influx] in a sensible manner, indeed the
sensation was as manifest as if it had been received by the bodily
senses.
E. Often he was infested in various ways by evil spirits, when
he was in temptations.
F. When writing anything that the spirits did not like, he was
almost possessed by them, so as to feel as it were a tremor or
shiver.
G. Fiery lights were seen by him.
