1086 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
F. When writing anything that the spirits did not like, Sweden
borg was almost possessed by them, so as to feel as it were a tremor
or shiver.
In the Diary of 1744 two kinds of tremors or shivers are described
by Swedenborg. One kind came over him when he was in a state
of temptation, and under the influence of evil spirits ; and the other
kind when the Holy Spirit or the Lord Jesus Christ was present
with him.
(
a) Concerning the former kind of tremors we read: “I went to
bed at nine o’clock; but the temptation, accompanied by trembling,
continued until half-past ten" (no. 19). Again, "I came into a state
of doubt whether I should not direct my journey homewards ; a
crowd of involved reasons [then] came, and my body was seized
with a tremor, (no. 110). Further, "Before I fell asleep to-day, I
was deeply engaged in my thoughts about the things on which I
am writing. ’Hold your tongue,’ I was told, or I shall slay you;’
and I saw some one sitting on a piece of ice. I was frightened.
I then restrained my thoughts, and one of the usual tremors came
over me" (no. 174).
The mode in which such tremors were caused by evil spirits
Swedenborg describes in the "Spiritual Diary," no. 1934, in the
following manner: "During some night this month evil spirits tried
to terrify me from malice, while I was in bed; they occupied the
joints of the whole body with a tremor, so that the whole body
trembled. This I had also experienced before, viz., that the evil
spirits invaded all joints and fibres, and inflicted thus a sensible
tremor *** Sometimes I experienced this to such a degree that if
any other had experienced it, he would have thought that he was
possessed by demons." From A. C. 3219, we learn that such tremors
sometimes came over him when spirits who were not bad suddenly
entered into him; he says there, "Lo ! some spirits fell into me with
such vehemence, that they caused a tremor in my nerves and bones,
so that I thought that, as formerly sometimes, some evil spirits had
invaded me with a desire of destroying me ; but it was not so."
(
b) Instances of a holy tremor or thrill are described by Sweden
borg in nos. 27, 147, and 162 of Document 209.
G. Fiery lights were seen by Swedenborg.
The only instance of this kind mentioned in the Diary of 1744
is contained in no. 65, and was quoted under the head of B.
Other instances of this phenomenon, as recorded by him, will be
found in the footnote on p. 145.
II. In the "Spiritual Diary," no. 219, Swedenborg makes the fol
lowing statement, under date of October 24, 1747 : "For several
